Short Answer:
Glow in a Bottle Face Oil by Ané Skincare is a fast-absorbing face oil formulated specifically for mature and changing skin. It is rich in fatty acid content to help replenish and support barrier health, reduce dryness, and restore radiance, without heaviness or greasiness.
Why It Works:
As skin ages, it produces fewer natural oils (lipids) and becomes more prone to dryness, dehydration and barrier impairment and sensitivity. Glow in a Bottle helps to fill that lipid depletion with omega-fatty acid rich nourishment, leaving skin more resilient, soft and glowy.
I avoided any kind of oil product since my teens. I always chose the 'oil-free' option for my super oily/combination skin and even then my makeup was often sliding off my face by mid-morning.
Then my skin started changing.
If you had told me in my twenties or thirties that I’d one day love putting oil on my face, I wouldn't have believed you. Back then, oil was the enemy, to be avoided at all cost.
But everything changed as I entered my fourties.
My skin was starting to feel different.
Drier. Duller. Slightly tighter. Sometimes even a little itchy - this was just completely different and new to me. And then in-between I'd still have these very oil periods of time, or very dry cheeks and a super-oily t-zone. Unpredictable day-to-day but with a very different trend towards increasingly drier skin.
At first, I couldn’t quite put my finger on what was happening — I just knew that my usual skincare wasn’t working anymore and my skin was feeling different.
Then, on a trip to South Africa around my 40th birthday, I picked up a simple bottle of Baobab oil in a health shop and thought I'd just try something different. From memory it cost about R50, which is around £2.
And within 3–4 days, something remarkable happened.
My skin started coming back to life. It felt softer, a bit more supple and definitely more glowy.
That little bottle of Baobab oil sparked the beginning of Beauty by Ané Skincare.
It also opened the door to understanding what was really going on: it wasn't just my body that was changing, my skin was changing hormonally, and the way I cared for it had to change too.
What I needed wasn’t just more water (hydration), it was more fatty acid (lipid) content, more nourishment, and more barrier support to strengthen my skin's natural defences and support the changes that were happening.
Face oils (made out of plant oils), especially those rich in essential fatty acids, were exactly what my skin had been craving.
That’s when I started researching lipids, barrier biology, and fatty acid profiles in ageing skin. I began experimenting.
And eventually, Glow in a Bottle was born. It was when I started replenishing the essential fatty acid (lipid) content that I started to see a real difference. I just didn't realise at the time that was what I needed.
As we move through our 40s and 50s, skin changes in ways that most skincare routines simply don’t account for.
And one of the most overlooked yet powerful upgrades?
A high-quality face oil designed for mature skin.
Moisturisers are fantastic and necessary, and I'm certainly not advocating for not using your moisturiser.
It does depend on the formulation of course, but it's important to note that they’re often designed to attract and hold water in the skin, not necessarily to help replenish what’s missing.
And what’s missing in midlife skin isn’t just water. It’s lipids—the natural fats that keep your skin barrier strong, flexible, and healthy.
By our 40s, lipid production slows down dramatically. The result?
Increased dryness and flakiness
A weakened barrier, leading to redness or sensitivity
That frustrating feeling that your skin is both dry and shiny at the same time
As we age, and particularly as hormone levels like oestrogen decline, the structural integrity of our skin’s outermost layer (the stratum corneum)starts to decline and and the natural processes start to slow down.
This layer is often described as a “brick and mortar” structure, where skin cells (the bricks) are held together by a lipid matrix/barrier (the mortar).
In broad terms the lipid barrier/matrix is made up of a group of lipids:
These three lipids are critical for maintaining a strong skin barrier, locking in hydration, and keeping irritants out.
Here’s the problem: as oestrogen levels decline, the synthesis of these key epidermal lipids slows down. Something you may be experiencing as you're going into peri- and menopause.
This compromises the skin barrier, leading to increased Trans-epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) and making your skin more vulnerable to dryness, irritation, and environmental stressors.
Plant oils are rich in fatty acids, and when applied topically, they offer your skin the exact building blocks it needs to repair and fortify its natural structure.
For example, linoleic acid, a key component in oils like Grapeseed and Baobab, is a precursor to ceramides, which are essential for a healthy barrier.
Glow in a Bottle isn’t just a ‘moisturising oil’ — it’s a purposeful, fatty acid-rich replenishment product designed for skin that's changing due to age, hormones, stress, and environment.
These are the most common questions about using a Face like Glow in a Bottle in your skincare routine:
1. Will a face oil make my skin greasy?
No. Glow in a Bottle is formulated with lightweight, non-comedogenic oils like Grapeseed and Squalane, which have a molecular structure that allows them to absorb quickly without leaving a heavy or greasy residue.
2. Do I still need a moisturiser if I use face oil?
Face oils and moisturisers perform different functions. Moisturisers add humectants (like hyaluronic acid) to draw water into the skin, while face oils use occlusive and emollient properties to seal that hydration in. For optimal results, layer Glow in a Bottle over a water-based serum or moisturiser.
3. Can I use face oil if I have breakout-prone skin?
Yes. Breakout-prone skin often has a compromised barrier and can benefit from the right oils. Glow in a Bottle contains oils rich in linoleic acid (like grapeseed oil), which is often deficient in acne-prone skin. This can help to balance the skin's sebum composition, calm inflammation, and support barrier repair without clogging pores.
4. Is this safe for sensitive or menopausal skin?
Absolutely. It’s designed with changing skin in mind. While it includes a gentle essential oil blend, the total Essential Oil concentration is low and skin-friendly. That being said, if you have a known allergy to essential oils it is best not to use a face oil containing those ingredients. Always read the label, patch test and introduce slowly. We don't use any synthetic fragrance in Glow in a Bottle.
5. Will Glow in a Bottle clog my pores?
No. It's formulated with non-comedogenic oils, selected for their ability to nourish without blocking pores.
6. What’s the real benefit for midlife skin?
It specifically addresses the lipid decline associated with hormonal changes, like a drop in oestrogen. By replenishing essential fatty acids, it helps to strengthen the skin's barrier, reduce Trans-epidermal water loss, and restore the suppleness and resilience that often diminishes after 40.
7. Can I use it under make-up or SPF?
Yes. It sinks in quickly - but please do wait for it to be fully absorbed before applying your sunscreen. Press 2–4 drops into the skin or mix a drop into foundation for an added glow. Do not mix any face oil with your sunscreen.
8. What makes this different from other face oils?
Unlike generic oils, Glow in a Bottle is a purposefully formulated blend of oils with specific fatty acid profiles chosen to mimic and replenish the skin’s own lipids. The selection of ingredients is based on their ability to support a compromised barrier, soothe inflammation, and restore suppleness, making it ideal for the unique needs of midlife skin.
9. Will it interfere with actives like retinol or acids?
It can help buffer them. Apply after your retinoid or exfoliant to calm and support your barrier. Do not mix any face oil with a Retinoid serum or any other prescription products.
10. How long will one bottle last?
2–4 months with daily use, but it depends on whether you use it only on your face, or whether you include you neck and décolletage area, use it for face massage etc. A little goes a long way; 2–4 drops is usually enough. Listen to your skin to feel how much you need. Using too much oil for your skin's needs can make it feel greasy and takes longer to absorb.
11. Is it too heavy for humid climates
Not at all. The formula is lightweight and breathable. Just reduce your drop count if needed. Perfect for all-year-round use.
12. What does it smell like?
Subtly botanical — with notes of neroli, geranium, and patchouli. There’s no added fragrance; just a natural, gentle scent from essential oils.
13. Can I use this with facial massage or gua sha?
Yes, it’s ideal. Glow in a Bottle provides enough slip while feeding the skin barrier at the same time. Many customers love doing a relaxing gua sha or face massage with their hands at bed time.
14. How is a Face Oil different from a Serum?
Serums contain more targeted active ingredients like peptides, retinols, hyaluronic acid, Niacinamide that can penetrate deeper into the skin. Face oils are typically purely plant oil-based product that works to nourish, protect, and seal in moisture on the skin's surface. There is no rule that says you absolutely must have face oil in your routine, but I hope that this blog helps to explain that they can play an important role in caring for changing skin that needs more support.

Face oils aren't just for glowing skin.
They're for barrier health, lipid replenishment, and comforting your skin as it evolves and changes - and a healthy, strong barrier is the foundation of glowing skin.
Glow in a Bottle was born from lived experience, grounded in science, and formulated for real skin.
I've now used Glow in a Bottle for about 7 years and it's a key part of my skincare routine.
It's the small things that we do consistently that make a real impact and for me, a few drops of face oil in my routine is one of those things.
If your skin feels as if it's changing, your skincare should adapt too - and a face oil like Glow in a Bottle may just be the missing piece.
